As someone interested in learning to DJ but not ready to invest in professional equipment, I began exploring browser-based DJ applications. While accessible, many of these tools fail to capture the tactile, embodied gestures that define mixing on a physical DJ board. Tangible DJ emerged from this gap, designed as a browser-based gestural DJ interface that collapses the distance between low-commitment digital tools and the physicality of DJ performance. Instead of knobs and sliders, users mix music through hand movements tracked by their laptop camera, transforming the body itself into the controller. I concepted and built the full system from the camera layer up. To personalize the experience, the interface integrates Spotify listening history, populating the DJ library with tracks drawn directly from the user’s own listening habits. The visual design reinforces the conceptual framework of gesture-first interaction. Minimal typography and a deep blue color palette keep the interface visually quiet so that movement remains the primary signal. The restrained design reduces visual noise around the live camera feed while evoking the atmospheric lighting of DJ booths and digital audio workspaces.
